The Story so Far.........
Back in March, Southampton City Council announced that they would sell the Westridge Road carpark to Lidl, providing that the supermarket chain was successful in gaining planning permission to build a store there. Green Party candidate Chris Bluemel has been talking to shopkeepers in Portswood High Street about their views on the Lidl proposal, and very few seem impressed. One of the greengrocers told him in no uncertain terms: 'It will finish us off.' Even non-food shop keepers were adamant that it was not welcome.
Chris Bluemel says: 'The Tories are doing this to make a quick buck, not to serve the needs of Portswood. Portswood has a thriving community of local traders, but with a Sainsburys being built and the Lidl proposal, this will be under threat. I will be fighting this proposal through all appropriate means.'
